relation & relationship：とても紛らわしい語です。diplomatic relations (外交関係)とかinternational relations (国際関係)などのように、国家間の関係という場合にはrelationsになるようです。あるいは重力と速度の関係とか、宗教と政治の関係などの場合にもrelationになります。「関連性」「原因と結果」「繋がり」などに重点を置くのがrelationと捉えればいいのかもしれません。The U.S. has relations with China, with Vietnam. (米国は中国やベトナムと国交があります) ここでの複数形(relations)は相互複数でしょう。The United States and China are pledging positive relations moving forward.(米国と中国は今後前向きな関係を構築していくと約束した)このようにformalな場面でrelationsは使われます。blood relations （血のつながり）とかthe relation between the original book and the movie (原作と映画の関係)というような場合もあらたまった言い方であればrelationとなるでしょう。 一方、「重要な関係」「特別な関係」「親密な・密接な関係」といったニュアンスの場合にはrelationshipが用いられている気がします。the relationship between lung cancer and smoking (肺がんと喫煙の密接な関係)――これを医者が言うのであれば、a relation between smoking and lung cancer となりそうです。 love-hate relationship (愛憎関係)  the parent-child relationship (親子の関係) 　build a firm relationship (強い信頼関係を築く) a possible relation between the murder and a robbery (殺人と強盗との関係)　the special relationship between China and North Korea (中国と北朝鮮との特別な関係)　ちなみに、語尾の-shipはshape (形づくる)という動詞と関係がありそうです。というのも、友人同士のつながりを作り出すのがfriendshipですから。国であれ人であれ物事であれ、それぞれの繋がりを作り出すのがrelationshipということでしょう。
